Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is a non‑destructive testing (NDT) technique used to detect surface‑breaking defects in non‑porous materials. By utilizing the principle of capillary action, PT reveals fine cracks, pores, seams, and laps that are not visible to the naked eye, making it a reliable and widely applied surface inspection method.
What is Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)?
Liquid Penetrant Testing involves applying a low‑viscosity liquid penetrant to the surface of a component. The penetrant seeps into surface‑breaking defects through capillary action.

After a controlled dwell time, excess penetrant is removed and a developer is applied, which draws the trapped penetrant back to the surface to form clear, visible indications under white light or UV light, depending on the penetrant type.
