Make Energy Efficiency Your Competitive Advantage

As Singapore continues its push towards greater energy efficiency and sustainability, from 1 July 2026, companies and individuals importing regulated electrical products must comply with the National Environment Agency (NEA)’s Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS) and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) requirements.

MEPS and MELS will now also apply to regulated goods imported directly by end users (either by companies or individuals) for their own use. This extends compliance obligations beyond traditional suppliers and manufacturers.

What is the Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS)

The Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme (MELS) requires regulated products to display an official NEA Energy Label, enabling consumers to compare energy efficiency ratings before purchase.

What is the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)

The Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) establish the minimum energy efficiency levels that regulated products must meet before they can be supplied in Singapore.

Importers must ensure regulated products meet MEPS requirements, are registered with NEA, and carry the required MELS energy label, where applicable.

โš ๏ธ New Advertising Requirements for Regulated Goods

NEA’s updated regulations introduce new advertising requirements for regulated goods. Advertisers must ensure only compliant products are promoted, and that visual advertisements display a legible Energy Label. Where this is impractical, the product’s tick rating and Certificate of Registration (COR) number must be clearly stated.

๐Ÿ›’ Electronic marketplace operators are also required to prevent the publication of non-compliant advertisements and take reasonable steps to remove or disable access to non-compliant listings for users in Singapore.

For businesses, product registration requires supporting documents, including prescribed test reports. Approved products are issued a Certificate of Registration (COR) valid for three years.

As energy efficiency regulations evolve, early compliance planning and product assessment can help streamline market access and regulatory compliance.
