Firefighting Foam Testing
Fire foam storage containers often operate under harsh environmental conditions which can cause the quality of the foam concentrate to be affected by factors such as dilution, contamination, temperature extremities and deterioration. For these reasons, most international safety organisations such as NFPA 11, recommend that both foam concentrates and the foams produced to be tested on an annual basis to ensure that they meet their required specifications and are in a satisfactory condition.
SETSCO foam testing laboratory currently offers the following lab tests for firefighting foam concentrate (low expansion)/ foam solution (produced foam) sample according to the EN 1568 / ISO 7203 / NFPA 11 and IMO MSC.1/Cir.1312 regulations:
- Physical properties: pH, Refractive Index, Density/Specific Gravity and Viscosity.
- Sedimentation
- Foam Expansion Ratio
- 25% and 50% Drainage Time
- Surface Tension
- Interfacial Tension
- Spreading Coefficient
- Chemical Stability
- Proportioning Test/ Solution Concentration Testing
Sample Requirements:
- Foam concentrate testing: a minimum amount of 1litre of foam concentrate is required for each sample;
- For Produced foam testing: a sample of at least 0.5 litre produced foam, 0.5 litre foam concentrate and 1.5 litres of the actual foam system water is required. The water sample should be taken as close to the mixing device as possible;
- For ready-made foam solutions: a sample of 10 litres will be needed.
