Setsco leadsthe way in being the first amongst ComfortDelGro (CDG) business unit to attain the Occupational Health and Safety Standard (OHSAS) 18001:2007.

OHSAS 18001 is an achievement of a world class Health and Safety System, to improve and safeguard the well being of employees, visitors and business operations.

The accreditation reflects the hard work and commitment of Setsco’s safety committee headed by Yusoof Aynuddin, Divisional Director of the Mechanical Technology Division and Damos, Setsco’s appointed Safety Consultant. Through the initiatives from and effort from the Safety Committee and the Department Safety Representatives (DSR), Setsco’s safety culture has grown stronger and more robust.

The continued growth in services and expansion of its current premises, implementing safety programs in Setsco was not easy. Operational workflow has become more diverse and people are more scattered. Recognising the need to establish a dynamic safety management system, the management strategic decision to form a large Safety Committee compromising of 22 Department Safety Representatives (DSRs) was the catalyst to inculcate a strong safety culture.

The appointment of DSR was to achieve a stronger network for communication and a targeted implementation of safety programs that will have a greater impact within the organisation. DSRs, with at least one appointed for each department, are able to assimilate company-wide safety programs into their departmental work processes.

DSR close network with the Safety Committee to discuss safety issues and brainstorm solutions and implement them help created more positive outcomes. DSRs also have the joint responsibility to conduct compliance checks at their departments to identify deviations and problems and report them immediately for remedial actions.

Managing culture change is not easy. Approach to safety was initially reactive as opposed to proactive. However, through the committed efforts of the Safety Committee and DSR, their collective activities have created a positive ripple effect throughout the organization. This is evident through the level of safety awareness that prevails in the various departments.

OHSAS 18001 is just one milestone as Setsco’s top management aims to achieve the highest possible standard of safety for the organization. Setsco is steering towards attaining the BizSafe Star, the highest local safety award next year. The continuing initiatives and programs by the DSRs and Safety Committee will provide a firm foundation in helping Setsco meet the requirement while creating an accident-free workplace for everyone.
